For centuries a important part of a firefighters gear is this type of helmet used to protect them from heat, cinders, and falling items. The term leatherhead was slang for firefighters because the helmets were made from leather. Over the years the composition of this traditional helmet has changed from leather, to metals, to composite lightweight polymers and other plastics.
