Flash units were attached to cameras when taking photographs in poorly lit areas and indoors. The round cylinder held batteries that would light the flash bulb when the the camera was triggered. The flash bulb was good for one photo only and had to be replaced for each photo. The blue bulbs were used for color film. Clear bulbs were used for black & white film.
